Darlington Programme, 17th November 2007
This time last year I published my annual objectives and I would like to give you a self-appraisal of how I have performed against each:
- Run matchday surgeries every month throughout the season and report the main topics raised, dealing with any individual questions raised in a timely manner.
I have held a surgery every month with one exception, October 2006, when due to severe traffic congestion I was unable to arrive in time. I have recorded and published the main questions I have been asked and followed up when necessary with individuals. Score: 9/10.
- Visit different parts of the ground on matchdays when I am not holding a surgery.
Throughout last season I visited different parts of the ground meeting many of you. This season rather than just hold my surgeries in the Princess Royal I have decided to also hold them in different parts of the ground, so that you know when I am going to be where you watch the game. Score: 10/10.
- Publish at least one programme article a month in the Club programme.
During the 9 months of last season I produced 7 articles and during this season 4 in 4 months. Space is not always available in the programme but nevertheless I could do better here. Score: 7/10.
- Communicate regularly via the Supporter Director website (www.bfcsupporterdirector.co.uk) ensuring supporters are aware of the activities I am involved in.
I maintain a log on the website of all activities I undertake representing either the Club or the Supporters’ Trust. In addition to the programme articles I produce my electronic letter to you publishing 19 letters in the last year. I should have communicated more frequently. Score: 7/10.
- Ensure that the policies on tickets for the boardroom and complementary tickets are published and that the numbers of complementary tickets are known by the end of the season (2006/7).
After considerable debate within the Trust and the Club this was finally published last month in the Lincoln City programme. I should have done more to conclude the debate and get the document published sooner. Score: 6/10.
- Facilitate the growth of the involvement of people with disabilities in the Club, Supporters’ and Community Sports Trusts.
After some initial meetings with various bodies I have made little progress with this due to my own lack of availability. Score: 2/10.
- Review the effectiveness of the policy of encouraging the young (under 16s) to attend matches at Griffin Park.
Again due to my own time and the great work of our Community Sports Trust in this area I have not done any work in this area. Score: 0/10.
- Set-up a networking group between Trust owned Clubs in the Football League and other interested parties.
Discussions have been held with various clubs allowing us to benchmark off the pitch performance. After discussion it was decided not set-up a formal networking group. Score: 6/10.
- At the end of the season chair an open review with the Club, supporter representative groups and individual supporters of the Club’s performance against the Club charter and associated promises made to the Football League.
The meeting was held on 19 June 2007. As this was the first meeting it was decided to hold it with the CEO, BIAS and Bees United representatives. At this meeting we took the opportunity to not only discuss the Club Charter but also stewarding and the forthcoming smoking ban in the stadium. The communication around this process will be improved next time. Score: 4/10.
Summary of Performance
I seriously underestimated the amount of time the above activities would take. This, together with my having increased responsibility at work, has led to me not putting as much time as I hoped into achieving these objectives. For the forthcoming year I have to be more realistic, however I will not let this affect me being available to listen to you and represent your views to the Club Board.
If you have any feedback on my performance or any thoughts on what the Supporter Director should be doing come to my next surgery at the Princess Royal before the home game with Grimsby Town on Saturday 8 December, between 1.15 - 2.15 pm and not on 29 December as previously advertised. Alternatively you can write to me care of the Club or at or directly via comments page.
