Letter from the Brentford FC boardroom, 6th November 2008
Dear Supporters,
Last night I was fortunate to be at Roots Hall to witness a cracking FA Youth Cup game between our youth team and Southend’s. The game had everything: end-to-end football, plenty of goals, a sending off, a saved penalty, the woodwork being struck, near misses, great saves, some skilful play and even a firework landing on the pitch from a nearby firework display! Both teams gave everything and did their respective Clubs credit.
One thing Brentford supporters like to see in their team is commitment, passion and determination. Last night the youth team showed it all. Despite losing a two goal advantage, then having a player sent off (I thought harshly), and then going 3-2 down, they didn’t drop their heads and battled back to equalise. They eventually triumphed 9-8 in a penalty shoot-out. This was against a good side who sit top of their league having won all their games this season bar one which they drew.
The team were a credit to themselves, the management and coaching staff, the Club and supporters. No one can guarantee anything in football in terms of their next performance but they proved last that they have the right qualities as a team and can produce against the odds.
Their next game in the Cup is at Griffin Park against Thurrock on 19 November, 7.45 pm kick-off. Please come along and support them, they deserve it.
Let's work together!
Jon Gosling
